Process of Prepainted Steel Coil

 

 

Cleaning The Strip
The cold rolled coil is cleaned of any impurities and oil to ensure uniformity and that nothing gets trapped between the layers that could have an adverse effect on the finished product. It also ensures the subsequent layers stick fast.
Cleaning can be done in several ways such as brushing, a chemical bath or alkaline dip, a water bath etc…. It is then rinsed to remove any cleaning impurities and residues.

Zinc Alloy Application
This layer can be 100% Zinc but is often made up of Zinc & Aluminium and the exact proportion of each is unique depending on the supplier and the product. Some products also include Magnesium in this alloy for additional properties.
Typically, this metallic coating is added to the steel before the coil arrives at the paint coating plant but it can be added as a pre-process on the same line before the subsequent paint layers are added.

Surface Treatment
This chemical conversion coating stage is critical to ensuring the primer and the paint are securely bonded with the steel. The chemicals used, such as alkaline oxides, change the surface properties of the previous zinc layer.
The actual chemicals, and the exact process to apply them, differ depending on the manufacturer and the country of origin- some countries restrict which chemicals can be used.

Rinsing & Drying
Although some surface treatments don’t require a rinsing stage, for others, this is done to ensure that the material presented for primer application is free from any chemical residues and is fully dry to ensure secure bonding of the subsequent layers.

Primer Application
The primer coating may be added to one or both sides of the steel and prepares the steel sheet to ensure the finished paint layer sticks fast.

Drying, Curing & Cooling
This ensures the primer is fully hardened, clean, dry and the correct temperature before the application of the next layer to ensure optimum properties are upheld.

Finished Paint Coating and Backing Coat
Typically, the front and the back of the steel have different coatings as they each meet different end user needs.
Whilst some processes can apply the layers at the same time and cure, cool and dry them at the same time, other processes apply them separately and dry, cure and cool in between each layer.
This is the final painting stage in a typical two coat paint system.

Optional Clear Protective Coat
For a three coat paint system a clear protective coat is added on top of the final layer of paint. It is only added to some premium products and gives additional protective benefits to the product, particularly for UV.

Drying, Curing & Cooling
This ensures the paint is fully hardened, clean and dry, ready for rerolling and then to be shipped to the customer.
The addition of a surface pattern i.e. embossing, can occur at this stage, just before the paint is fully cooled and hardened.

Packaging
The coil is packaged differently depending on the supplier but typically includes edge protection for both the inner and outer edges and a covering for the outside of the coil. This protects it from transport and storage damage so that it can be transported safely to any customer anywhere in the world.

Coating Types

SMP

The reliability of the SMP steel frame is higher than that of PE. In terms of adherence and formability to materials, silicone is not as strong as PE.

PE
Because of its strong adhesion, the PE coated stainless steel sheet is easy to process, shape, and the price is comparatively inexpensive. However, the other degree of resistance to UV and cracking is relatively poor. The roof of ordinary civil buildings can be fitted with PE color-coated steel.

PHigh durable Polyester or HDP

The outdoor weather resistance is 16 years greater than the ordinary SMP coatings. Its weather tolerance and flexibility are much higher.

PVC

PVC coating has great anti-chemical and anti-water and is very dense and can protect the substance properly. The PVC coating is hardly used because of chemical exposure.

PVDF

The color preservation and corrosion resistance are excellent for PVDF coatings. It is the highest grade of the PPGI sheet coating for constructing buildings.

Acrylic

The overall performance is great, the price is high, and is used only in some fields (such as containers).

 

 

How to Store Prepainted Steel Coil
  • Avoid soaking the prepainted steel coil with water and store it indoors in a clean environment. Do not stack it in the open air to prevent corrosion from various corrosive media.
  • Ensure that the floor of the storage site is flat, free of hard objects, and has sufficient load-bearing capacity.
  • If temporarily stored outdoors, use square sleepers underneath as supports, and pay attention to good ventilation and flat ground.
  • To prevent warping, cover the product with a rain-proof cloth to protect the prepainted steel coil from direct sunlight and rain.
  • To avoid crushing, color-coated steel coil is generally stored without stacking, and the number of stacking layers should be strictly limited.
  • Avoid placing prepainted steel coil in sandy and dusty places that can fail to keep the coating surface dry and become a source of corrosion.
  • Ensure sufficient space is left in the storage site for lifting equipment.
  • Make reasonable arrangements for the storage location of steel plates and steel coils to ensure easy access, minimizing unnecessary movements as much as possible.

A: The Cold Rolled Steel Substrate (Layer 05)
The steel has already undergone significant processing to get to this stage. Typically originating from a Blast Furnace & BOC process, the slabs are hot rolled to create thin steel coil and then cold rolled to create steel sheet at the desired thickness/ gauge. The cold rolling process creates a thinner material and is used to refine the properties of the finished product.

Zinc Alloy (Layers 04 & 06)

Surface Treatment
The coil undergoes a surface treatment, on the front and back, before being presented to the next painting process to ensure that the next layer can be adequately bonded to the zinc layer.
Primer (Layer 03)
Primer is typically only added to the top of the steel as it ensures a strong adhesion with the top layer of paint. It may also be added to the bottom layer depending on the environment the finished product will be in and type of base coat being added.
Backing Coat (Layer 07)
The thickness, appearance and qualities of the backing coat is entirely dependent on the end use of the product.
In some cases the base/reverse side of the steel sheet will be visible to the end consumer in which case the material needs to meet aesthetic standards as well as meeting corrosion and fire standards, for example in some agricultural buildings.
In other cases the base of the steel is covered by another product, for example to create a composite panel, and so the function of the material is extremely relevant but the aesthetics are not so. Here the backing coat would need to provide long term protection to the steel, protect it from corrosion & mechanical damage during the panel creation process and provide excellent adhesion for the panel core.
Painted Top Coat (Layer 02)
For pre painted steel this is the layer that the end user will see and the key aesthetics come from a combination of the colour & design; the emboss style & depth (or whether to emboss at all); the gloss level.
The type and depth of emboss used depends on the supplier and offers a unique texture to the product. The depth of the emboss can be from 50microns but some emboss designs could trap dirt so the environment the finished product will be in must be considered when choosing an emboss type and depth.

Clear Protective Coat (Layer 01)
Many products do not have a top coat as the majority of products are 2 layers (primer and topcoat) but this extra layer can add an additional layer of protection that increases UV protection, and therefore reduces the likelihood of colour fade, and scratch resistance. It is a clear layer so does not dilute or affect the colour underneath.
